Summer Jets by Iain Archer

Summer Jets by Iain Archer aches with the grief of a lost love… and damned but his phrasing is unique and amazing. He can take one word and work it into multiple notes and moods. Just one word. Difficult. Feeling. Over. Skyward. There’s brilliance in how Archer phrases words that seem really impossible to put to this particular music, but yet, he does.

But then he takes that genius a step further by using this unique metaphor of summer jet trails standing for love lost. He’s talking about the end of a love affair here. An achingly fresh ending. “It’s time to fake a laugh, pretend it’s only disaster…..find anywhere else to look…. I don’t want this feeling.”

The closer you are to someone or something that dies, is the closest you’ll ever be again to that person or thing ever again. Ever. Other people in your life, if you say goodbye to them, you know you’ll see them again in the future. But with the death of someone or something you love, the end is the closest time you’ll ever see them again. All you’re left with is a memory of what was once: the summer jet trails. And that death comes so fast “the trail of summer jets streaming over,” and yet time ahead seems endless, “they’ve been there so long” and “the movement looks so slow….”

“And you’re gone.” His love has gone. No matter what he wished could be, “still, you go.”

And it’s such a pretty song.
Complete Lyrics to Summer Jets by Iain Archer:

It’s time,
it’s time to fake a laugh,
pretend it’s only disaster.
Because silence...
that’s the worst of all,
with your riot thoughts.

And suffer, suffer on your own.
Don’t make it difficult,
and find somewhere,
anywhere else to look....
I don’t want this feeling.
The trail of the summer jets
streaming over.
The trail of the summer jets
and you’re gone.
Because it’s cold,
up there where they fly,
and too bright to look
for long.
Parting wounds fresh for your eyes,
they’ve been there so long.
And look how we just stick around
gazing skyward.
And how the movement looks so slow....
but still you go.
Yeah.
The trail of the summer jets
streaming over.
The trail of the summer jets
and you’re gone.
Yeah.
The trail of the summer jets
streaming over.
The trail of the summer jets
and you’re gone.
Yeah...
and you’re gone.
Yeah....
and you’re gone....
and you’re gone.

A word of caution – if someone you love has Alzheimer’s (as someone I love does), the video can be unbearably sad to watch.
