Chapel Song by We Are Augustines

So here’s my take on the meaning of the Chapel Song lyrics.

It’s about a guy who has lost the love of his life.

photo from official video and meaning of the lyrics of chapel song by we are augustinesHe could have kept her, but he just couldn’t bring himself to get married. He wasn’t ready. So she marries someone else and he’s at the wedding. Part of him is devastated that he has missed his shot with her. The other part of him is understands too well the fear he would have felt had he been the one walking down the church aisle.

There’s his girl, going into the chapel to get married, walking down the aisle. And aisle that would have felt like a mile if he had been walking down to get married, so now he’s shaking like a leaf. That is how he thought he’d feel getting married. That he’d be stuck lying to everyone about how happy he was, when, in fact, the handshakes he would have given all the guest at the reception wouldn’t have been real – because he’d no longer be himself. He’d be caught up in a marriage.

Later, he describes himself as a bowl full of bruised fruit, inside a chapel of shiny apples. Everyone is fresh about this new venture into marriage. But not him. He’s lost her – merely because of his fear of marriage. He’s the ruined one.

Finally the wedding is over. Everyone steps outside. He doesn’t want to think about her wedding. It’s a bright blue sky. He has a future to look forward to that doesn’t deal with being married to her. But he doesn’t want to look at the photographs of the happy bride. The woman who could have been his. He keeps reminding himself that it’s a bright blue sky.

This is a beautiful song about a love lost.

Chapel Song
by We Are Augustines

There goes my girl
into the chapel
Now she’s walking down the aisle
And it feels just like a mile
And I shake, shake, shake like a leaf
And I’m lying, lying, lying through my teeth
I got a pocketful of hand shakes
And it don’t mean nothing.

There goes my girl
into the chapel
Now she’s walking down the aisle
And her man begins to smile
And I shake, shake, shake like a leaf
And I’m lying, lying, lying through my teeth
I’m a bowl of bruised fruit
Inside a chapel of shiny apples

Tear up the photograph
‘Cause it’s a bright blue sky
Tear up the photograph
‘Cause it’s a bright blue sky
Tear up the photograph
‘Cause it’s a bright blue sky
Tear up the photograph
‘Cause it’s a bright blue sky
‘Cause it’s a bright blue sky
‘Cause it’s a bright blue sky
