If there was ever a song to listen to after these elections. No matter which way you voted or didn’t vote.
Whenever I’m irritated at myself or other people (which is often), I listen to the song “Missed The Boat” by Modest Mouse, because it reminds me to stop taking everything so seriously.
The lyrics are perfectly self-deprecating in such a way that hearing them actually reminds me that I’m not such a bad person after all. We can all suck! And we can all get caught up and lost in the crap that simply. just. does. not. matter. (“Of course, everyone goes crazy over such and such and such.”) We forget to enjoy the small things in life:
“Oh, and I know this of myself….
I assume as much for other people…
oh, and I know this of myself….
we’ve listened more to life’s end-gong
than the sound of life’s sweet bells.”
There is balance to everything in life – there’s a yin, there’s a yang. You can’t have one without the other. The balance is referenced here: “While we’re on the subject can we change the subject now?” and “We were certainly uncertain… at least, I’m pretty sure I am.” Which is yet another reminder that things really don’t suck as much as we sometimes feel they do. This small bit of suck we might be feeling is simply the opposite side of the happiness that we get to feel coming up. Yay.
The funniest part of the song are these lyrics:
Oh, and we carried it all so well,
as if we got a new position.
Oh, and I laugh all the way to hell,
saying, “Yes, this is a fine promotion.”
Oh, and I laugh all the way to hell…
Yes, we think we’re getting to where we need to go – we think we’re rising stars in whatever it is we’re doing – but, well, life doesn’t work that way if we get too caught up in what we own, do, with who we think we are. Hell is forgetting how to be exactly who you are, without all the bells and whistles and promotions.
Anyway, this song always makes me laugh when I just need to be reminded to stop taking things so seriously.
Here are the full lyrics for Missed The Boat – Modest Mouse
While we're on the subject could we change the subject now? I was knocking on your ear's door, but you were always out Looking towards the future, we were begging for the past Well, we knew we had the good things, but those never seemed to last... oh, please just last! Everyone's unhappy, everyone's ashamed. Well, we all just got caught looking at somebody else's page. Well, nothing ever went quite exactly as we planned. Our ideas held no water, but we used them like a damn. Oh, and we carried it all so well, as if we got a new position. Oh, and I laugh all the way to hell, saying, "Yes, this is a fine promotion." Oh, and I laugh all the way to hell... Of course, everyone goes crazy over such and such and such. We made ourselves a pillar, we just used it as a crutch. We were certainly uncertain... at least, I'm pretty sure I am. Well, we didn't need the water, but we just built that, go God damn! Oh, and I know this of myself.... I assume as much for other people... oh, and I know this of myself.... we've listened more to life's end-gong than the sound of life's sweet bells. Was it ever worth it? Was there all that much to gain? Well, we knew we missed the boat and we'd already missed the plane. We didn't read the invite, we just dance at our own wake. All our favorites were playing, so we could shake, shake, shake, shake, shake! Tiny curtain's open and we heard the tiny clap of little hands, a tiny man would tell a little joke, and get a tiny laugh from all the folks. Sitting, drifting around in bubbles, and thinking it was us that carried them. When we finally got it figured out, that we had truly missed the boat. Oh, and we carried it all so well, as if we got a new position. Oh, and we owned all the tools ourselves, but not the skills to make a shelf with. Oh, what useless tools ourselves.
Modest Mouse asked their fans to make videos for “Missed The Boat”… and from there, the band compiled their favorite parts.
